In Chapter Seven (p. 111), we share a story of Lana and Derrick and their use of river stones. Onto these stones they painted the virtues and values that were important to them. They shared the painted stones with each other over several months. After three months they put the painted stones on their relationships altar, one stone at a time, changing them every month from that time forward.
To enable you to also do this practice, here is the exercise from our book:
“Take the lead from Lana and Derrick, and invoke the principles important to you in the sames way that they did.
Pick stones, just a few each, from a place that has meaning for the two of you. Paint labels on them with qaulities that you would like to develop in yourself, such as “Equanimity” and “Beauty” and flares of color too. Hold them in your hands and take them with you through your days, occasionally pulling them out to contemplate the qualities written in stone. After a time, give one stone to your partner. Tell a story or stories about the quality that you’ve written on that stone and that ths stone itself now holds. Speak soul to soul.”
